Washington fights disclosure in Fannie-Freddie mortgage suit

The US government claims it should not have to disclose internal documents as part of a lawsuit involving mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac because unrelated sealed testimony by former Treasury secretary Tim Geithner and other officials was leaked in a separate case.

A US judge ruled defendants could seek evidence in the case filed by Bruce Berkowitz’s Fairholme Funds over the government’s pocketing of Fannie and Freddie profits. But Washington is fighting to exempt certain documents.
