Shelby named Chairman of powerful Banking Committee, here’s why that matters

U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) on Thursday was named the Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, a panel with jurisdiction over a wide range of issues, including the country’s financial institutions, public and private housing, urban development and mass transit, and federal money policy, most notably the Federal Reserve System.
“It is an honor to lead the Senate Banking Committee in the 114th Congress,” Sen. Shelby said upon being elected by the committee’s members. “I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House and Senate to implement policies that will foster economic growth.”
